Cyber Security Apprentice

Job description

As a Cyber Security Technologist Apprentice, you'll gain hands-on experience in protecting critical network infrastructure, responding to security incidents, and supporting the UK's national research and education sectors' digital safety. This entry-level role is designed for individuals with a strong passion for technology and cybersecurity.

Key responsibilities and deliverables 

  • Participate in an agreed extended working period, currently 08:00-18:00 up to a total of 35 hours per week 
  • Triage and respond to security alerts and tickets 
  • Monitor, respond, and escalate cyber security incidents raised in ITSM or via CSIRT phones 
  • To take part in the development of incident response drills and exercises to improve processes and procedures and to define improvement to incident response metrics
  • To support the continuous monitoring of SOC customer IT infrastructure, networks, and systems for signs of suspicious or malicious activity. This includes the use of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and Endpoint Detect and Response (EDR) Network and DDoS tools
  • Maintain the integrity of evidence during information gathering and investigation actions 
  • Maintain awareness of changing security threats to enable enhancement of current tools and signatures

Person requirements

We know you may not tick every box, and that's okay - we're more interested in your potential. If you have most of what we're looking for, we encourage you to apply. We are looking for:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE grades 9-4 or above (including English and Maths)
  • Basic understanding of computer systems and operating environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Keen interest in technology and cybersecurity
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Proactive approach to learning

While not essential, we would value candidates who bring any of the following: previous experience with security tools, basic understanding of network security concepts, participation in tech-related school projects, customer service experience, or completion of online cybersecurity courses. An interest in technology, IT-related subjects, or any foundational knowledge of computer security principles would be advantageous. A natural curiosity about technology and willingness to learn are key – full training will be provided.
