Course content

If you want to be a solicitor in England or Wales, this is the postgraduate course for you.

Develop practical legal skills to prepare you for all of your responsibilities in a career in law. Working in York St John Law Clinic will help you to develop transferable legal skills and experience legal practice.

This course is subject to authorisation and approval by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). If you are looking to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales you have several options. This includes attempting the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination 1 and 2 (SQE 1 and 2) which will be introduced from September 2021.

As a graduate of this course you will be able to seek to progress to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales by doing one of the following:

  • Completing a period of recognised training, usually a 2 year paid ‘training contract’ with a law firm or other organisation authorised to provide training.
  • Qualifying through equivalent means by compiling a portfolio of work documenting at least 2 years’ experience working under the supervision of a practising solicitor in a paid or voluntary role. This could be as a paralegal or equivalent.
  • Taking the Solicitors Qualifying Examination 2 (SQE2) and completing 2 years' qualifying work experience (QWE). This includes time spent in York St John Law Clinic.

You will be able to tailor your experience by choosing modules that align with your interests and ambitions. You can choose from areas such as:

  • Commercial law
  • Family law
  • Employment law
  • Immigration law
  • Mental health law.
