The course is open to candidates who are currently working a substantial proportion of their job role in dysphagia care.
Eligible professional disciplines include but are not limited to:

• Speech and Language Therapists
• Dietetics/Nutritionists
• Radiographers
• Respiratory Physiotherapists
• Occupational Therapists
• Specialist Nurses
• Health Visitors
• Social Workers

Applicants for this module will normally be fully qualified in their own professional discipline, and have completed any post-qualification practice competencies that are required by their professional regulatory body

Course content

If you’re a current professional whose role involves supporting individuals with dysphagia (swallowing problems) then this course will help you to streamline services for your patients and enhance the clinical excellence and cost-effectiveness of your practice.

This course is ideal for those working in a multidisciplinary team whose work supports those with dysphagia. We’ll help you to design a robust and evidence-based evaluation of your current practice in your own healthcare setting so that you’re able to implement sustained improvements and make a difference to patients’ lives.

It’s designed for current professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Dietetics/Nutritionists, Radiographers, Respiratory Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Specialist Nurses, Health Visitors and Social Workers.

After completing this programme you’ll receive the Certificate in Multidisciplinary Practice in Dysphagia Care in recognition of your professional development. Completion of this award does not confer any recognition of professional or clinical competencies.

• Course Leader Dr Hazel Roddam has an international reputation for teaching evidence-based practice and leading professional development events and conferences in dysphagia.
• The other module tutors are all experience academics and active researchers in organisational change, collaborative working and practice change within an implementation science framework.

You’ll have opportunities to network with multidisciplinary colleagues from across the UK, so you’ll get to share knowledge and best practice.

You’ll get the chance to attend guest presentations from experienced practitioners from a range of disciplines and across a range of clinical populations with dysphagia. You’ll hear from professionals working in fields such as neonatal care, paediatric special needs, adult learning difficulties, acquired neurological conditions, head and neck cancers, dementia, and end of life care.

These guests will be invited to present illustrative examples of multidisciplinary services initiatives in dysphagia care from their own work setting. They will also help to facilitate group exercises to critically reflect on alternative options for evaluating their services within relevant theoretical frameworks.

This is a single module taught over one semester. The course will comprise 200 hours of study, of which 36 hours will be delivered as taught sessions at the University’s Preston Campus.

The remaining hours comprise independent study time. We’ll give you clear guidance and support as you develop your personal study plan.

There is one coursework assignment.

Attendance on this module will provide the opportunity for active networking with multidisciplinary colleagues from across UK; for the reciprocal exchange of best practice knowledge.

Applicants will normally be fully qualified in their own professional discipline and have completed any post-qualification practice competencies that are required by their professional regulatory body (normally completed within 12 months after their initial qualification).
