• Applicants must hold a medically related qualification or have completed the penultimate year of a medical degree or relevant professional qualification.
• Applications from all candidates will be considered on their merits in the light of the nature and scope of the programme and if they have relevant experience such as armed forces.
• Applicants may be interviewed.
• A detailed admissions procedure will be forwarded on application.

Are you a healthcare, emergency or urgent care professional who is considering venturing into the exciting and expanding field of Disaster Medicine? The MSc Disaster Medicine course expands the scope of your skills, enabling you to work as part of a disaster response team – delivering, planning and co-ordinating disaster and conflict healthcare.

Delivering healthcare to communities affected by disasters, be they natural or man-made, is an aspect of healthcare that is both demanding and immensely rewarding. This course will see you acquire the specific skills and expertise required to adapt and respond to the needs of communities when they are at their most vulnerable.

Designed by medical professionals with experience in disaster and conflict medicine, the course also provides you with the skills required to plan, manage and deliver a medical programme under challenging conditions, whilst also considering ethical, legal and logistical issues.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Learn from an experienced, inspiring and specialist team led by Dr Ayman Jundi, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with 20+ years of experience. He shares his hard-earned, hands-on experience in disaster management, gained through his work and through the co-founding of charity, Syria Relief.
• Explore triage, outreach teams, pre-hospital management, evacuation and communication as well as public health and infection control, family planning, peri-natal care, mental health, rehabilitation and national and international preparations. 
• Broaden your understanding of risk management and preparedness, public health considerations, the role of technology in disaster medicine, and the impact of extreme conditions such as altitude or extreme cold and heat.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

The course will be delivered both online and on campus, allowing you to study either full-time or part-time whilst practising.

The team who have written this programme have extensive experience as Doctors in the UK and in disaster conditions. They have drawn upon their expertise and experience to develop a programme which will underpin professional practice in extreme conditions.

Course leader, Dr Ayman Jundi’s specialist interests include Major Incident and Disaster Management, Resuscitation Training, and Medical Education.

In 2011, in response to the ongoing crisis that had engulfed Syria, his country of birth, he co-founded a charity, Syria Relief, to deliver aid and health care to civilian communities inside the war-stricken country.

He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Charity. He has undertaken Course Leader responsibilities for Disaster Medicine, and is involved in research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

OPPORTUNITIES

The skills and knowledge gained on this course can be usefully applied on short-term deployments to a disaster zone, or in employment with international relief agencies and organisations.

Intercalating medical students may use this qualification as the foundation for further study and specialist practice following qualification.
