Entry requirements

• This course is open to UK students only.
• Applicants will be registered with an appropriate regulatory body and have a licence to be a dental therapist.
• Be registered with a defence union - possessing indemnity insurance with cover at an appropriate level.
• Be in professional practice or a hospital appointment while attending the course.
• Hold a current certificate of immunisation against communicable disease Hepatitis B.
• Have sufficient competency in English language (IELTS: 7.0 or equivalent).
• Competency may be demonstrated by qualification, accreditation of prior learning or separate University assessment.
• DBS: all potential students must undergo an enhanced DBS check prior to admittance to the programme.
• All suitable applicants will be interviewed.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.

It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.

About the course

For dentists looking to introduce dental implants within their practice, this is the ideal course. Our MSc Clinical Implantology combines home study with the opportunity to treat patients under the direct clinical supervision of experienced consultants. Busy dental practitioners can gain the skills and knowlegde required of a Dentist with Special Interest (DwiSI) over one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

This course is delivered via blended learning, using a combination of online delivery, face-to-face learning and clinical sessions. It prepares you to provide safe and appropriate dental implants as part of your clinical practice.

There’s also the opportunity for continued mentoring and support from the experienced clinicians and educators who deliver the course.

Full-time students will be based at Preston Campus, and undertake their clinical sessions within the UCLan Dental Centre.

Part-time students will be based off-campus, undertaking both learning and clinical sessions within one of our approved regional training centres.

• Focus on contemporary knowledge in Dental Implantology – we teach evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for both patient and practitioner.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

The course is delivered in conjunction with our academic partner VSSAcademy and is offered at Regional Training Centres throughout the UK. It has evolved from the successful MSc in Dental Implantology and has been re-designed in response to student feedback. It carries the same 180 credits as the previous three-year part-time MSc in Dental Implantology.

Two modules (DX4017 and DX4027) are delivered and assessed online in real time with the support of the academic team.

The clinical modules (DX4016 and DX4026) are assessed via blended learning: recorded lectures quizzes, live webinars, hands-on practical sessions and clinical days. Assignments include case presentations (seen and unseen) and treatment of live patients under the guide of a mentor. For detailed module information please visit the course page on our website.

PATHWAYS

Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of an MSc in Clinical Implantology from the University of Central Lancashire. It provides you with 180 academic credits, which equate to 1,800 hours of verifiable CPD. This relates to the GDC Development Outcomes as follows:

• The PGCert Clinical Implantology is an alternative exit award

FUTURE CAREERS

Our MSc Clinical Implantology course provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with Extended Skills.

Upon completion, you may choose to pursue further training and development in either a clinical or academic domain.

Clinicians completing this course should expect to provide implant treatment within their practice, under the guidance of a clinical mentor. More complex techniques can be learned by completing more advanced courses, study, practice and mentoring.
