Entry requirements

• Applicants will be registered with an appropriate regulatory body and have a licence to be a dental therapist.
• Be registered with a defence union - possessing indemnity insurance with cover at an appropriate level.
• Be in professional practice or a hospital appointment while attending the course.
• Hold a current certificate of immunisation against communicable disease Hepatitis B.
• Have sufficient competency in English language (IELTS: 7.0 or equivalent).

DBS: all potential students must undergo an enhanced DBS check prior to admittance to the programme.
All suitable applicants will be interviewed.

This Master’s in Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) is ideal if you’re a dental professional who’s looking to gain advanced skills in implant treatment.

On this course you’ll undertake authentic clinical training and education, delivered both online and face-to-face, preparing you to provide safe and appropriate treatment as part of your clinical practice. The main focus is on patient management and the delivery of appropriate, evidence-based clinical care. There are supporting modules on critical appraisal, research strategies and clinical audit.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• During this two-year course you’ll attend teaching sessions within the School of Dentistry on our Preston Campus. The early part of the course will consist of lectures together with practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility.
• You’ll progress to working on live patients under close supervision in the University’s Dental Clinic. Here you’ll be supported to assess, undertake and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. There will also be clinical sessions in local hospitals which will enable you to see and treat a wider range of patients.
• By the end of the course you’ll have acquired the advanced skills in dental implantology. You’ll have explored how to plan and manage advanced clinical cases, options for hard and soft tissue augmentation, how to manage complications of implant treatment, and much more.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

As a student on this course you will have access to excellent online materials to guide and support your learning.

During this two-year course you’ll attend teaching sessions based within the University’s School of Dentistry. To support the course content, you’ll have access to excellent online materials to guide and support your learning. These will include lecture notes, videos of lectures and details of upcoming assignments, so you’ll be able to prepare yourself for your study days on campus as well as carrying out additional independent work from home.

Work during the early part of the course will consist of lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility, as well as work on pig’s head and similar training resources. As you move through the course, you’ll progress to working on real patients under close expert supervision at the University’s Dental Clinic.

Within the Dental Clinic you’ll develop your skills and be assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). At the same time you’ll engage in further learning through presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small, leading to an informal and supportive learning environment.

Assessments which test your core knowledge and skills will take place throughout the course. These focus on your higher level skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering information. Typical assessments include analysis of clinical cases, presentations, unseen clinical case assessments, practical tests, written examinations and critical essays.

PATHWAYS

Postgraduate qualifications in dentistry are not regulated by the General Dental Council in the UK. For successful students who wish to continue on the specialist pathway there will be the possibility of a further year’s training in order to help prepare you to sit the Membership in Periodontology examination of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

Postgraduate qualifications in dentistry are not regulated by the General Dental Council in the UK. For successful students who wish to continue on the specialist pathway there will be the possibility of a further years training in order to help prepare you to sit the Membership in Periodontology examination of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

OPPORTUNITIES

This is the ideal course for dentists looking to introduce dental implants treatment within their practice. During this course you will assess, plan and treat patients under direct clinical supervision, in our UCLan Dental Clinic.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.

It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.
