Course content

The School Direct route gives you the chance to learn ‘on the job’ in a school and you will work as part of the teaching team from day one – learning from experienced, practising colleagues and immediately putting your new skills into practice.

This option is perfect if you are either already working in a school without QTS (e.g. Teaching Assistants), or if you are a university graduate or a career changer looking to get into teaching by 'learning on the job'.

You will need to secure a position working in a school. We can help you to find this if neccessary.

If you are currently working in a Jewish School without QTS we strongly recommend you consider this programme; you might not need to leave your current school to become trained.

You will be based in a class setting at your 'host' school and will be expected to lead a class. You will be part of the staff of a school, earning and being part of a team from day 1. Time will be given for the training programme and in-school mentoring support. Throughout the year you will be observed by the 'host' school, LSJS staff and external moderators.

During the year, candidates have a 1-week placement in a contrasting school and a 2-week 'swap' placement in another school with a trainee in the programme. At least one of these placement will be in a contrasting key stage.

LSJS is an excellent provider of Teacher Training. We offer the chance to train as a Primary School Teacher, or a Primary Jewish Studies Teacher.

The School Direct programme has a near 100% employment record giving you the best start to your career in teaching. You will learn in a small, nurturing community with personalised support and mentoring. You will have the opportunity to train in high-performing schools.

Ofsted recently reported 23/03/2023:

"Leaders have a passion for preparing trainees for a career in teaching, both in schools with a Jewish ethos as well as those with no religious character. Leaders welcome trainees of all faiths or none to train with them. They ensure that trainees experience three contrasting placements during the course, including at least one in a non-faith setting.

Trainees hold the courses in high regard. They feel well supported by leaders and course tutors at the centre, including with well-being. Trainees appreciate the small size of LSJS, especially the close contact that they have with their tutors."

Alternatively, if you wish to train as a Secondary School teacher, please see our School Direct (secondary) programme.

In the first instance, before applying, we recommend you speak to the lead school to apply. For our London programme, please contact Wolfson Hillel Primary School by emailing Laura Russell laura.russell@WHJPS.jcat.co.uk or calling 020 8066 2680.
