Introducing MSc Drug Discovery, Design and Synthesis — University of Sussex

If you want to work in the fast-paced world of medicinal chemistry, then a Masters in drug discovery, design and synthesis could be for you. Course convenor Dr Barny Greenland explains what the programme at the University of Sussex involves

What is medicinal chemistry and drug discovery?

Over the past century there has been a remarkable increase in life expectancy worldwide, which is largely down to the significant advancements in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Medicinal chemistry involves the assembly of molecules to create new drugs to cure diseases.

Drug discovery encompasses the entire process from identifying a new molecule with potential to cure a disease, to synthesising it and evaluating its efficiency within the body. This comprehensive approach has revolutionised healthcare by enabling the development of effective treatments for a range of diseases, ultimately improving global health outcomes.

Can you tell us about the Drug Discovery Research project?

The Drug Discovery Research project offers students the chance to experience what it's like to work within the field of professional drug discovery.

You'll work alongside an expert from the department of chemistry to draft a research plan and will join a research team to produce new molecules. Over six months, you'll have the opportunity to refine and optimise these molecules, contributing to the development of a new drug compound.

Throughout this process, you'll gain invaluable hands-on experience in essential skills such as synthesis, purification and analysis of new molecules. You'll develop the practical skills required within drug discovery, including use of a diverse set of analytical instruments, equipping you with the expertise needed to thrive in this dynamic field.

What are the courses unique selling points?

You'll join a community of leading scientists who are striving to make the world a better place. You'll learn from industry and research experts, while gaining practical skills to prepare you for a career in medicinal chemistry.

Our experts are producing compounds that could help patients with diseases including Leukaemia and Endometriosis, as well as synthesising molecules that have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

We have close links to the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre, which can facilitate access to additional experts in chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology. This collaboration means that you'll be exposed to the latest developments in early-stage drug discovery, giving you an insight into potential market-ready medication.

What type of students would suit this course?

This MSc is ideal for those who are passionate about entering the world of drug discovery. It's particularly suited to those interested in the creation of new drugs. It's also perfect for anyone with a broader curiosity, seeking insights into the journey from initial concept, to life-saving medications reaching the market.

What advice do you have for anyone who wants to do the course?

  • Demonstrate your enthusiasm and passion in your application. Highlight your interest in the field and eagerness to contribute to making new discoveries in the lab. Showing your enthusiasm can make a significant impression and convey your commitment to the subject.
  • Prepare with background reading. This is a challenging and rewarding course. We share a reading list with our applicants to help them prepare, when issuing their offer to study at Sussex.
