Entry requirements
You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a Masters degree.
Your qualification should be in a subject relevant to your chosen area of research. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.

From Shakespeare, contemporary literature and literary theory to Derrida, Freud and creative and critical writing – we welcome PhD applications in a wide range of areas.
Over 90% of all English faculty research was rated world-leading in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014 REF). As a doctoral student, you’ll be supervised by academics who lead in their fields of study.
