Masters-level degree or international equivalent is usual.
We recognise that applicants have a variety of experiences and follow different pathways to postgraduate religious studies research.
We treat all applicants with alternative qualifications on an individual basis. We may also consider relevant work experience.

Course content
Our PhD gives you the time and support to explore your theological interests while maintaining your existing commitments.
You will complete a written thesis of up to 100,000 words.

Staff and support
Our staff include theologians, sociologists, biblical scholars and philosophers so we can support your research with a range of different approaches and methodologies.
Supervision is provided by research-active staff. With over 10 years experience in running distance learning degrees the department will provide the support you need. The Department of Theology and Religious Studies is ranked seventh in the UK for ‘research power’.
Distance learning
Visiting the university in person is not essential to successfully complete your PhD.
