Course content

This MPhil/PhD in Pure Mathematics enables students to investigate the purely abstract, theoretical areas of mathematical discovery at the highest level. Students in the University's School of Mathematics and Physics are able to work alongside specialists within the field in a vibrant community, sharing ideas and experiences.

Postgraduate research in pure mathematics covers the areas of lie algebras and group theory. Training is provided through individual supervision of research and by advanced seminars. Research students can benefit from a comprehensive programme of training designed to develop research skills and methodologies.

A team of academics will offer advice and support on publishing work in international journals and presenting at global conferences, and there may be opportunities to engage in international collaborations.

Department specialisms

Staff in the School of Mathematics and Physics conduct leading research in fundamental and applied mathematics and physics, ranging from pure mathematics to applied nanoscience at the interface between biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The School collaborates with top research institutions in Germany, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, and the USA. The School’s research focuses on four key areas: Algebra, Astrophysics, Computational Physics, and Experimental Nanophysics.
