Master of Education
Entry requirements
Here at the University of Essex Online, we believe that education should be accessible to all. That is why we offer both an academic and work-based experience route onto our Master of Education. Additionally, you will need to pass your first assignment set within your two-week induction period of the course in order to continue your studies.
Academic entry route
You must have the following qualifications as a minimum:
- an undergraduate degree from an approved institution, equivalent to a UK Honours degree, or a relevant professional qualification
Work experience entry route
You must meet the following criteria:
- at least two years’ teaching experience in a post-compulsory educational setting
English language requirement
Our courses are taught in English so to study with us you must have an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 or equivalent. If you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification, you will be required to pass a free online English test to assess your proficiency. You don’t need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in, any of these countries.

Course content
Take your teaching practice to the next level with this 100% online and part-time Master of Education (M.Ed.). This unique course enables teachers, trainers and tutors from a variety of backgrounds to enhance and reflect on their teaching approach in an innovative way. An advanced qualification can also support career growth towards a more senior position within your institution.
On this course, you’ll engage with other educational professionals across the globe and discover how technology-based learning can enhance practice. Find out about the historical context behind the subject and the key theories and philosophies while developing your skills as a reflective practitioner.
Throughout this course, you’ll cover a wide range of areas including:
- the philosophical ideas and theories that underpin educational practice
- delivering effective teaching and learning
- Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) theories and practices
- how people learn: cognitive scientific research
Towards the end of your studies, there will be an opportunity to conduct a research project centred around an education setting. This is an exciting chance to investigate and examine a key area of your interests related to learning, education and teaching.

Information for international students
International students residing in specific regions outside of the UK may be eligible for a partial scholarship for our undergraduate and postgraduate online courses.
Students residing in Africa can also enjoy a 20% scholarship for the January 2025 intake of all eligible undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
