Entry requirements
No formal qualifications or experience is necessary.
As our modules are delivered in English, a high proficiency of English is required. If English isn’t your first language, your ability should be equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5. Don’t worry if you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification – we offer a free online English test to assess your proficiency.
You don’t need to prove your English ability if you’re a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in, any of these countries.

This course has been designed for individuals who are looking to climb the healthcare career ladder or step into postgraduate study. The course will enable you to confidently analyse and interpret surveillance data and statistical outcomes in research to make informed decisions to protect public health.
There’s a strong focus on various topics such as:
- the history of epidemiology and contemporary epidemiology
- statistical and epidemiological concepts, including prevalence and incidence
- descriptive statistics
- inferential statistics including confidence intervals, p values and hypothesis testing
- inferential statistics including odds ratios, relative risk and simple regression
- sampling and sample size calculation
- observational studies and standardisation
- ethical issues and data sources in epidemiology
- intervention studies and research reviews
- critical review or appraisal
- global surveillance and monitoring
- epidemiology and social media
Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a digital certificate confirming you’ve achieved 20 academic credits at postgraduate level. You will also have the opportunity to progress on to one of the following postgraduate qualifications:

- PG Dip Infection Control (120 credits)
- MSc Infection Control (180 credits)
- PG Cert Global Mental Health and Wellbeing (60 credits)
- PG Dip Global Mental Health and Wellbeing (120 credits)

Please note, acceptance on to a postgraduate qualification is subject to meeting the entry requirements of your chosen programme.
