Course content

This Stress, Ageing and Chronic Disease MRes provides the opportunity to develop research skills with internationally recognised researchers working on multidisciplinary projects. The research examines the role played by stress, inflammation and the natural ageing process in the initiation and progression of diseases such as; cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative and musculoskeletal disorders.

Students work within the research Centre for Stress and Age-related Disease, focusing on three main areas of research: chemical biology, cell biology and translational science. Learning alongside postdoctoral and other postgraduate researchers with shared interests students discover how to design and undertake a substantial research project. The project allows demonstrates creativity and initiative and provides and understanding of the relevance of scientific research to industry.

The programme develops lab-based skills using specialist multidisciplinary research facilities, preparing students for employment in industry or further academic study. Students gain a further understanding of research literature and the wider research community through specialist journal clubs with seminars from expert speakers as well as more informal student-led presentations.

Course structure

The Stress, Ageing and Chronic Disease MRes is typically completed full-time in one year, but can be taken part-time over two years. The course is structured to include a significant research component which is undertaken throughout the course. In addition, a series of supporting taught modules further enrich learning.

The MRes research project is at the heart of the degree and equips you with a fundamental understanding of the research process. Option modules complement the research project and career aspirations.
