Academic entry requirements
- Primary dental qualification – BDS or equivalent
- Full registration as a dentist with the UK General Dental Council
- Professional Indemnity Certificate
- Evidence (certificates) of successfully completed ILS and PILS courses within the previous 24 months (i.e. between September 2020 - August 2022) is necessary for entry in September 2022

Course content
This course gives you the knowledge and skills necessary to use intravenous and inhalational sedation techniques on a wide range of anxious patients, including adults and children.
About this course
The Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGCert aims to provide you with:
• a systematic understanding of the theoretical principles which underpin conscious sedation in dentistry and the care of patients undergoing sedation
• a comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in intravenous and inhalational sedation techniques, as applicable to UK practice in dentistry
The programme is one of the few in the UK that provides dentists with Level 7 PG Certificate training in sedation. We provide students with hands-on clinical training and provide the key knowledge base and skills in conscious sedation required to safely practice conscious sedation as an independent practitioner.

Delivery
This one-year part-time course consists of 4 didactic days of lectures and seminars, plus 15 supervised clinical attachment sessions.
Didactic and clinical teaching is spaced evenly over a full academic year. The first study day will take place on Wednesday 13 October 2021.
Facilities
Our facilities include:
- a cone beam CT scanner and implant planning software. This is used for patients treated on our implant programmes
- in-house production laboratories providing excellent learning opportunities around clinician-technician communication
- excellent library and computing facilities on-site
- research laboratories in Oral Biology, Anthropology and Dental Materials Science
- a dedicated clinical research facility. It offers clinical training and research opportunities of the highest international standard

To study this course you need to meet the following English Language requirements: Direct Entry: IELTS 7.0 overall (with a minimum of 7.0 in all sub-skills).
Pre-sessional English Language courses are not accepted as an alternative entry to this course.
