Entry requirements

All entrants must hold an Honours degree in a relevant subject (normally 50% subject content of an honours degree), or a recognised equivalent qualification. You must have a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in both English language and mathematics prior to application and if you are offered an interview you will undertake a written task to assess your level of standard English and a mathematics diagnostic task to assess your numeracy skills. For entry onto a teaching programme you will be required to pass the Skill tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to commencement of the course. Potential applicants would benefit from engaging in School Experience within a secondary mainstream setting, within their chosen subject specialism. Applicants must meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) requirements for Initial Teacher Training by successfully completing an Enhanced Disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring System (DBS).

Course content

If you are passionate about geography, this course will equip you with the skills to provide secondary school students with an understanding of the complex geographical systems in the world around them. The course is designed to provoke thought, challenge assumptions and help develop you as a reflective practitioner of the subject, so that you can enter the teaching profession with clear educational priorities and the skills with which to achieve them. You will have the opportunity to explore and develop your knowledge of key issues including globalisation, global interdependence and how human and physical processes interact to influence, and change landscapes, environments and the climate. The use and application of GIS is embedded within the course. In addition, the programme is designed to develop you as professional geographers confident to challenge misconceptions and teach with passion and authority.

This one-year course provides you with the comprehensive training needed to teach geography education. The PGCE in Secondary Geography is a 36 week, full-time course, designed to enable you to meet the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) standards for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS).

PGCE routes at Newman provide two opportunities - Professional Graduate Certificate of Education which prepares applicants for teaching or Postgraduate Certificate of Education which will include 60 credits at Masters level. The latter will be offered to applicants with an outstanding academic record or significant experience.
