Entry requirements

You must be a current student at university level (Level 3 or equivalent) and aged 18 years old or over.

This course is practice-based (not credit-bearing), so no formal English language qualification is required; however all classes will be taught in English

Upon successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.

Birmingham City University’s International Summer School offers you the perfect opportunity to spend three weeks sampling UK university life, as well as giving you the chance to enhance your academic skills and visit some of the UK’s historic towns and cities.

This summer school offers a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience in the mechanical, electronic, automotive, manufacturing and advanced engineering domains. It integrates real-world industrial challenges with practical, project-based activities inspired by the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) and CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate) methodologies. The summer school encourages creative thinking and innovative problem-solving, preparing students for the future of engineering solutions.

What will you study?

Participants will explore key components of modern and future engineering problem solving through a practical industry-driven project. This includes working on real-world industrial challenges while gaining insights into cutting-edge technologies in mechanical, Automotive, manufacturing and electronic engineering. The summer school provides opportunities to work with our expert academic staff and industry mentors from Birmingham City University's College of Engineering, using the state-of-the-art facilities at our City Centre Campus.

During this course, you will:

  • Develop creativity in engineering design and implementation through the STEAM approach.
  • Work on industry-inspired challenges to explore advanced engineering technologies.
  • Experience our world-class facilities such as automotive test cells, engine test labs, and mechanical and electronic labs.

Visas

Please check if you need to apply for a visa before you travel.

Visa and Non-visa nationals

  • Visa nationals are required to apply for a visa before they travel irrespective of the length of visit. The standard visitor visa can be used for those coming to Birmingham City University to attend the International Summer School.
  • Non-visa nationals are exempt from having to apply for a visa before travel to the UK (for visits up to 6 months) – they request permission at port of entry.
  • You must have a passport to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole duration of your stay.
  • If you are unsuccessful in obtaining a visa and can provide evidence of this, we will refund your payment minus an administrative charge of £50. Please refer to our terms and conditions.
