Coastal and Marine Conservation Volunteer

Job description

Are you passionate about the ocean and dream of contributing to marine conservation? International Volunteer HQ’s Coastal and Marine Conservation project in Zanzibar offers a unique opportunity to work hands-on with sea turtles, coral reefs, and sustainable coastal ecosystems. Experience the beauty of Zanzibar’s beaches while making a meaningful impact on the environment and local communities.

Located in Matemwe, a picturesque village on Zanzibar’s northeastern coast, this project focuses on protecting marine life, including sea turtles, and preserving fragile coastal ecosystems. Volunteers play a critical role in marine conservation efforts, from monitoring coral reefs to participating in beach clean-ups and environmental education.

Volunteer for as little as £16 / day, including accommodation. Volunteers engage in a wide variety of activities designed to support marine conservation and community development. These include:

Sea Turtle Conservation

  • Spotting turtle nests during early morning beach patrols.
  • Assisting local biologists in relocating egg nests to safe areas.
  • Releasing baby turtles into the ocean (seasonal opportunity).

Coral Reef Monitoring and Farming

  • Snorkeling to monitor the health of coral reefs.
  • Coral farming via scuba diving (PADI Open Water certification required).

Community and Environmental Projects

  • Educating local children and tourists about environmental conservation.
  • Supporting seaweed farming initiatives with local communities.
  • Beach clean-ups, recycling, and upcycling projects.
  • Helping at community waste collection points.

Sustainable Living Initiatives

  • Maintaining an aquaponics system to grow vegetables and raise Tilapia fish.
  • Supporting pollinator habitats for solitary bees.
  • Growing fruits and vegetables using permaculture techniques.

Workshops and Language Lessons

  • Weekly turtle identification workshops.
  • Optional Swahili language lessons included in the program.

As a Coastal and Marine Conservation volunteer in Zanzibar you’ll be adding value to the local community, while also developing personally and professionally through:

  • Developing communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Gain hands-on experience in marine conservation and sustainable living.
  • Learn about sea turtles, coral ecosystems, and community-based conservation.
  • Immerse yourself in Swahili culture and language.
  • Explore Zanzibar’s stunning beaches, coral reefs, and vibrant culture.

Why volunteer in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar’s breathtaking natural beauty and rich biodiversity make it a paradise for marine conservation enthusiasts. The Marine Turtle Hatchery at Matemwe and nearby conservation camp offer an ideal setting for meaningful volunteer work, while allowing ample time for snorkeling, diving, and exploring.

Make a lasting impact while enjoying one of the world’s most beautiful coastal destinations.
