What you’ll do
At Scottish Water, we’re committed to safeguarding the environment while supporting Scotland’s industries. Our Trade Effluent team plays a pivotal role in managing wastewater produced by businesses, ensuring it’s safely discharged into the public network without harming the environment. In this role, you’ll directly contribute to balancing the needs of industry with the protection of Scotland’s natural resources.
You’ll gain valuable experience in how we regulate and manage industrial wastewater. You’ll track and control effluent discharges, advise businesses on pollution prevention, and ensure they meet their environmental commitments. From tackling pollution incidents to helping shape sustainable practices, your work will make a real difference in protecting Scotland’s water environment.
Day to day, you’ll be involved in:
- Ensuring business customers have the necessary Consents in place and are fully compliant with agreed conditions.
- Monitoring and controlling industrial effluent discharges, investigating and resolving any non-compliance.
- Advising on pollution incidents and offering expert guidance on pollution prevention and environmental regulations.
- Becoming an expert in our commercial agreements, including wholesale charges.

Trade Effluent Team
This team is at the heart of ensuring that industrial wastewater is safely and responsibly discharged into the public network. They manage compliance with regulations, preventing blockages, pollution, and treatment issues at our Wastewater Treatment Works. Working closely with businesses, they offer valuable advice on pollution prevention, ensuring that companies meet their environmental obligations. Through collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders, the Trade Effluent team is instrumental in protecting Scotland’s environment while supporting industrial growth.
Over your two years with us, you’ll receive dedicated training to become a fully qualified Service Planner, building the skills and confidence needed to succeed. With role rotations every six months, you’ll gain valuable experience across various teams, preparing you for a rewarding career at the forefront of Scottish Water’s business transformation.
How does the graduate programme work?
- You’ll be employed on a permanent contract from day ine, with a starting salary of £29,000.
- As you progress through the programme and reach key milestones, you’ll be rewarded with salary increases that recognise your growth and commitment to ongoing learning. Upon completing the programme, you’ll also have the opportunity to advance into a Service Planner or Data Scientist role, starting from £33,560. What we are looking for
- You’ll have graduated within the last three years (or be on track to graduate next summer). Your degree should be in Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science – or a similar field of study. And we’re looking for a minimum of a 2:2 classification.
- And you’ll need a full UK-issued (DVLA) driving license – or be on track to pass your test.
- We’re looking for someone who’s curious about things like analysis, asset management, business strategy, and data science. You’ll be someone who enjoys building connections and working with different people. If you’ve been involved in a project that made a real impact, that would definitely be a bonus.
- You’ll need to live within commuting distance of one of our main office hubs, e.g., Edinburgh, Stepps, Dundee, Inverness.

What happens next?
- Assessment activity will kick off in January with some surprisingly fun (no, really) online testing.
- Final face-to-face interviews will happen during February. Where you can give us a good grilling too.
- If you accept a place on the programme, you’ll go through some pre-employment screening during the Spring, including a criminal record check.
- All our new Graduates will start together in September, with a week-long induction event in Glasgow. You’ll learn more about the organisation, meet our leaders, visit some of our operational sites, start making friends, and have a lot of fun.
