Graduate Transport Planner

Job description

There is an exciting opportunity to join Kent County Council in the capacity of Graduate Transport Planner and kickstart your career in the Highways and Transportation Division.

As part of a rotational programme, you will work at a consistently high level in each of the placements, adding value to the work of the Highways & Transportation Division, while working within different teams and service areas to understand all aspects of the Division, and how these relate to the key priorities for the Council and its partners.

You’ll also undertake project work in each placement that will progress ideas and proposals for highway infrastructure. Advising the County and District members as appropriate regarding highways and transportation issues as well as building strong working relationships to ensure personal and professional development are also key responsibilities for your role. You will also need to represent the Highway Authority’s position with the public and other external bodies.

What we are looking for

You will need to have a proven track record of leading seminars, discussion groups or meetings, leading and managing projects in an academic or work environment as well as experience of working in a team and having effective professional relationships. Having experience of both verbal and written communication addressing a varied audience is also essential.

An understanding of the local government, of local and national planning and transport policies, and of unique transport challenges in Kent is required to be successful in this role. Along with a commitment to working in the public sector and an appreciation of how local authority services are linked in the pursuit of holistic outcomes for residents and businesses, you will also require the ability to work in a team, against tight deadlines without comprising high standards. Strategic thinking, good problem-solving skills, and proficiency in IT is essential, specifically being well-versed with MS Excel, MS Word and MS Project.

A willingness to work towards the Associate Project Manager apprenticeship is essential.
