Summer Development Internship Programme

Job description

Are you ready to make a real difference?

If you’re passionate about protecting the environment, tackling climate change, and contributing to impactful projects, the Summer Development Internship Programme (SDIP) starting in at the Environment Agency is your opportunity to shine. This isn’t just an internship, it’s your chance to work on projects that truly matter, develop invaluable skills, and explore a rewarding career.

Why Choose the Environment Agency?

We don’t just care for the environment; we work to transform it for future generations. As an SDIP intern, you’ll join a team tackling some of the UK’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Here’s what makes this programme unique:

  • Work with Purpose: Contribute to real-world projects that have a tangible impact on communities, wildlife, and ecosystems.
  • Hands-On Experience: Gain practical insights and collaborate with professionals who share your passion for environmental protection.
  • Shape the Future: Be part of initiatives that address climate change, environmental equality, and sustainable development.

"Being able to learn more about an organisation that forms the backbone of environmental work in England is so rewarding. Contributing to the EA’s work has been an exciting and satisfying process." – 2024 SDIP Intern

What you’ll do

Over 12 immersive weeks, you could explore:

  • Projects in climate change, energy, environmental monitoring, and diversity initiatives.
  • Advanced tools like ArcGIS to create solutions for real-world challenges.
  • Insightful site visits with senior specialists for hands-on learning.
  • Developing maps, reports, and sustainable strategies that shape future decision-making.
  • Building essential skills like project management, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement.

"I worked on projects with real-world applications, from creating fire prevention plans to documenting flood-risk zones. It’s a way of learning that can’t be replaced with e-learning." – 2024 SDIP Intern

How we’ll support you

We’re dedicated to your growth and success. During your internship, you’ll benefit from:

  • Dedicated Mentors: Get career advice and guidance from experienced professionals.
  • Office Buddies: Receive informal support to help you settle in.
  • Diverse Networks: Join groups for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) colleagues, LGBTQ+ communities, and more.
  • Programme Team Support: Stay on track with help from our dedicated team.
  • A Vibrant Cohort: Share experiences and learn alongside fellow interns.

Why work with us?

We prioritise work-life balance and offer a supportive, inclusive culture. Interns enjoy:

  • Hybrid working arrangements combining office, remote, and site-based experiences.
  • A structured development programme tailored to your career aspirations.
  • Perks like subsidised sports and social events, comprehensive health services (including free eye tests), and discounts on shopping, travel, and leisure.

"My team encouraged work-life balance and supported working in ways that suited me best. The experience deepened my passion for environmental work and solidified my commitment to the field." – 2024 SDIP Intern

We value diverse experiences and encourage applications from all backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented communities, including BAME individuals.

Join the Summer Development Internship Programme in June 2025 and make your summer count by building a brighter future for yourself and the environment.
