Graduate Development Programme

Job description

This 24 month programme is designed for students who have recently graduated and are looking to start their career at the heart of the UK economy.

What to expect

We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You will get an idea of the range of specialist roles there are across the organisation. You will also receive training sessions which focus on crucial skills to develop as a central banker. We hire graduates who are driven and intent on learning while building their career at the Bank.

In your first 12 months you will take part in a foundation year covering the Bank of England's breadth of work. In your second year, you will have the opportunity to study for further qualifications including at Master’s level.

How could you develop?

If you are interested in this programme, we will ask you to choose from the following streams:

Operations

As our most versatile stream Operations is open to students from all degree disciplines. If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

  • Payments
  • Banking
  • Financial Market Infrastructure
  • Prudential Policy

Risk

If you’re interested in developing technical expertise in areas such as stress-testing, the Help to Buy scheme or wider market risks, this is the stream for you.

For the Risk stream we have London and Leeds opportunities available. If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

London

  • Financial Market Infrastructure
  • Supervisory Risk Specialists

Leeds

  • Supervisory Risk Specialists
  • Prudential Policy

Data

If you’re interested in data, this is your stream. Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective.

For the Data stream we have London and Leeds opportunities available. If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

London

  • Data Analytics and Transformation
  • UK Deposit Takers Supervision

Leeds

  • Authorisations Regulatory Technology and International Supervision

Technology

If you’re interested in gaining hands-on experience working with our technical experts and getting involved in innovative projects, this stream could be for you. You don’t need a degree in computer science to apply.

You would work in our Technology division and your work could involve:

  • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
  • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
  • developing and presenting reports on change projects

Supervision

We welcome people with all subject backgrounds to become a supervisor. Your role would involve supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies.

For the Supervision stream we have London and Leeds opportunities available. If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

London

  • Financial Market Infrastructure
  • Insurance Supervision
  • UK Deposit Takers Supervision

Leeds

  • Insurance Supervision
  • UK Deposit Takers Supervision
  • Strategy Risk and Operations

Postgraduate

If you’re completing a master’s degree in economics or finance, this stream could be for you.

If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

  • Financial Stability Strategy and Risk
  • Prudential Policy

What we are looking for

  • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
  • eager to obtain unique insight into the workings of the UK’s central Bank
  • looking to build your network and pursue career pathways at the Bank
  • expecting or have achieved a 2.1 degree classification. Specific degree requirements for Economist & Postgraduate Streams.
  • achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels (or equivalent).
