Undergraduate student — Iqra Samad

After going through Clearing, Iqra studied the BSc Accounting and Finance at the University of Salford's Business School and is now pursuing a career in accountancy

Why did you decide to enter Clearing?

I applied to the University of Chester but switched to Salford after seeing the graduation ceremonies taking place at MediaCityUK. Salford is also much more accessible, with the train station right next to campus and Greater Manchester transport links, whereas Chester was a 20-minute walk away from the station.

I decided to switch for the above reasons and wasn’t sure how else I was able to do that. It was such an easy process - I called the week before I enrolled and was able to switch quite quickly.

Why did you choose this university?

Beyond the support prepping for exams, there was lots of guidance available on assignments too. The lecturers at Salford are all very approachable and provided so much support which I feel lucky to have had.

Prior to enrolling, I also had some misconceptions due to feedback from my college, during which teachers said support wouldn’t be readily available when I progressed into higher education, so this was a pleasant surprise.

What have been your university highlights?

Despite not living in halls or close to campus, I made a lot of friends - which has been amazing - as I didn’t think I would. Just a few weeks after enrolling, I’d met lots of people through my course who I know I’ll keep in touch with. 

Outside of my course, I really enjoy socialising with friends and trying new restaurants, so being so close to Manchester city centre has been perfect. I also love baking and have really enjoyed meeting new like-minded friends at university who enjoy the same things as me.

I also enjoyed making friends and the networking opportunities I’ve had through the industry connections we were able to make through the course. My course was intertwined with industry, so I knew I’d be fully prepared to progress into my graduate career in accounting. The support I was given building my CV and LinkedIn profile was invaluable too. 

How have you managed your finances as a student?

Train tickets were expensive travelling in, but my maintenance loan helped. University helped with cost-of-living support and grants too, and I also had a part-time job which helped with finances.

Briefly tell us about your plans for after graduation.

I graduated this summer and will start a job in September which my lecturer helped me to find. It’s in Manchester at accountancy firm, Beever and Struthers, as part of the audit team so I’m incredibly happy as it’s exactly what I wanted.

What tips would you give to others thinking about going through Clearing?

It’s such a simple process. I had a phone call that lasted just a few short minutes and, if there’s space on the course you’re interested in, plus you have the grades, you get allocated a place. I’d absolutely recommend it if you’re not fully happy with your original plans or the next steps you had in mind.
