PR account executive — Charlie Watson
Charlie studied media and journalism at Northumbria University before securing her role on the PR team at Gardiner Richardson
How did you get your job?
During my degree, we had to complete a placement, and that is when I connected with Gardiner Richardson. After graduating, I worked from home fulltime which doesn't suit me and my desire to be around others. When making the decision that I wanted a new position, I got in touch with Gardiner Richardson speculatively who had me in for a chat - the rest is history.
Why did you decide on a career in PR?
PR is a career that you don't hear about as a child, so it wasn't a job I've always wanted which is probably a common answer. I was introduced to PR during university when I took a PR module. It fascinated me. I enjoyed that every day was different, and every client was different. I am creative and I enjoy writing, so PR allows me to do both.
What's a typical working day like for you?
Working in an agency I work with a range of clients, so every task is different. Every day I do a news round-up for our health clients and I spend a lot of time constructing social content and sharing it. Apart from that, each day is new and every client's needs change daily.
How relevant is your degree?
My degree allowed me to develop my writing ability and knowledge of good industry practices. The PR module helped me distinguish that PR was what I wanted to go into, but some of the course was less relevant. Despite helping, my degree wasn't necessary and there are many ways to get into PR.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy being in a supportive environment that allows me to be creative and learn. Going from being at home fulltime to being around a team of people who support each other, have fun, and work hard, I am inspired daily and am continuing to learn.
What are the challenges?
Managing time and being organised is a struggle. Being in a fast-changing environment a to-do list doesn't always work. This is still a work in progress for me, but I am working to ensure I reach the best way to stay organised and on top of my tasks.
What advice can you give to others?
- Don't wait for a job to be advertised. If you find a company you like, it is worth an email. You never know where it could lead.
- Do what feels right. If you get into a job that seems like the perfect opportunity, but it doesn't feel right or make you happy, don't be afraid to try something new.
- Take advantage of every opportunity to learn because you can always improve.
