Case study

Masters student — Amarachukwu Ozorgwu

After completing a philosophy and logic degree in Nigeria, Amarachukwu wanted to study abroad in the UK and enrolled on the MSc Computing at Edge Hill University

Why did you choose this postgraduate course and university?

At the start of the pandemic, I completed a three-month design course on Coursera. I loved learning and wanted to develop my skills further. I fell in love with solving technical problems and looked for courses online. I was fortunate enough to find the conversion course at Edge Hill.

I wanted to study in the UK because it isn't too far from my home country. The culture and diversity make it a very comfortable and homely place for me.

What was the application process like?

Applying to Edge Hill was smooth compared to other universities I applied to. I submitted my application form through UCAS, along with my Statement of Purpose and other required documents.

Edge Hill provided someone to guide me through the entire process of my visa application. After I submitted it, the response was very quick.

How are you funding your postgraduate study?

When I applied, Edge Hill offered me a discount. My fees are spread out over three months, which is very helpful.

Tell us a bit about the course and what it involves.

The Masters in computing is an in-depth conversion course for people without a technical background. I have studied topics like software engineering and computer architecture.

My modules also cover research methodologies and programming principles like Python. During my databases module I learned about applications like SQL.

The course requires additional studying outside of class if you want to do well. It's important to make the most of the learning materials that the university provides you.

How does postgraduate life differ from undergraduate?

I came from a more philosophical background and have now switched to a more technical degree. My postgraduate degree is far more in-depth, and the quality of my work has had to reflect this.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

After graduation, I would love to apply the knowledge I have gained from my degree to real-world applications. I want to ensure that I am a valuable person, providing solutions in whichever company I find myself in and always striving to make a difference.

I also want to continuously upskill my knowledge, as tech is a constantly evolving industry. There is a lot to learn right now, and there will be more in the future.

What tips would you give to others choosing a Masters degree?

I suggest thinking about where you want to be working after you finish the course. Consider what you want to achieve after the degree to maximise your studies. You can turn your life around in one year through postgraduate study, but you need to make it count.
