Masters graduate — Prathesh Paulraj

After completing an MBA in India, international student Prathesh achieved the MSc International Business at the University of Salford

Why did you decide to pursue a Masters?

I chose to study a Masters to dive deeper into my field and go beyond what I'd learned during my MBA programme. The MSc was a great way to boost my career prospects by opening up advanced job opportunities and leadership roles on an international stage. I was excited about engaging in research and contributing new ideas.

I also knew that the experience would challenge me, helping to support my personal and professional growth, while providing valuable networking opportunities with professors, industry experts and fellow students, all of which would be beneficial as I progress towards my future career.

Why did you choose this institution?

I decided to complete my Masters at the University of Salford because it felt like the perfect fit for me. The university's strong reputation and hands-on learning approach were exactly what I was looking for. Its modern facilities and industry connections delivered real-world experience that was invaluable.

Beyond the academic side of things, the supportive and vibrant campus community made me feel at home. Being close to Manchester also meant there were opportunities for internships and meeting professionals in my field. Overall, Salford stood out as the place where I could grow, learn and achieve my dreams.

How did you fund your Masters?

I funded my qualification through a combination of personal savings, support from relatives, and part-time work in the UK.

Additionally, the university's instalment scheme made it easier to manage the remaining fees once I arrived.

What did the course teach you that your first degree did not?

The course provided me with international exposure. It allowed me to interact with students from a number of different countries, broadening my perspective and understanding of diverse cultures. This experience enhanced my global outlook and helped to develop my interpersonal skills.

How was the course assessed?

It was assessed through a variety of assignments, projects and presentations. These methods allowed me to apply what I learned in a number of practical ways and demonstrate my skills.

What networking opportunities did the course provide?

There were plenty of opportunities to network through industry events, guest lectures and workshops with professionals.

Additionally, there were group projects and collaborations with fellow students, which helped in building valuable connections.

I also got to volunteer with a number of charities and organisations, including:

  • British Heart Foundation (BHF)
  • Europia
  • Joint Commission International (JCI) Manchester
  • ReachOut
  • Stitched Up
  • Sue Ryder.

Beyond this, I learned about podcasting, plus I've received support in searching for jobs, developing my CV and improving my interview skills via immersive technologies like Bodyswaps, a virtual reality (VR) training tool. I have bolstered my CV even further by achieving Microsoft certifications.

Finally, the university offered excellent support through dedicated academic advisers, career service professionals, and a mentorship programme, ensuring I could access guidance and a raft of resources throughout my studies.

What have you been doing since graduation, and what are your career ambitions?

Since graduating, I've worked with a range of organisations to build a robust network in the UK. I've been actively involved with groups like JCI Manchester, GM (Greater Manchester) Business Growth Hub, and NatWest, which has allowed me to connect with a range of professionals and gain valuable industry insights. These experiences have been instrumental in enhancing my understanding of the business landscape.

Looking ahead, my career ambition is to become an international engagement officer. In this role, I aim to leverage my experiences and connections to drive global partnerships, foster cross-cultural collaborations, and contribute to international projects.

My goal is to bridge the gap between organisations and communities across borders, facilitating impactful global engagement and growth.
