Introducing MSc Criminology and Criminal Psychology — University of Essex Online

Dr Jenny Epoyun-William, head of law and criminology, explains how the MSc Criminology and Criminal Psychology blends theory with real-life case assessments

What is criminology and criminal psychology?

Criminology is the scientific study of criminal behaviour and the factors that may lead an individual to engage in such behaviour. It focuses on understanding the reasons behind crime. Alternatively, criminal psychology is a branch of applied psychology that involves collecting, analysing, and presenting evidence for judicial purposes.

Why should someone study this course at this institution?

Studying for an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Psychology at the University of Essex Online equips students with the skills to conduct both qualitative and quantitative research, as well as an understanding of various research methodologies needed for complex criminal investigations.

As students near the end of their degree, they will create an original research project on a topic of their choice within criminology and criminal psychology. This research can be included in a portfolio to showcase to future employers, and students are encouraged to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals with guidance from their supervisors.

The MSc enhances students' abilities to formulate reasoned arguments and make rational decisions while deepening their understanding of key criminological theories, practices, and perspectives. This knowledge aims to improve their potential impact in various settings within the criminal justice system, including policing, prisons, and probation.

Our Masters stands out from traditional criminology degrees by incorporating criminal psychology, allowing students to explore specialised topics such as the:

  • sociological approach to crime, criminology, and criminological theory
  • role of forensic psychology in managing mentally disordered offenders
  • status of victims throughout the criminal justice process
  • historical relationship between psychology and policing and its implications for modern policing
  • critical assessment of complex criminal investigations in line with national standards.

At the end of each module, we offer a 'Beyond the Module' video that allows students to reflect on their learning and consider how it can be applied in practice.
