Case study

Accounting and finance student — Alex Vieru

After completing the BSc Accounting and Finance (with a placement year) at Salford Business School, part of the University of Salford, Alex plans to pursue an auditing career

Why did you choose this university?

I decided on this university for two reasons. Firstly, it was close to the region where I live. The second factor was the opportunity to do a year in industry, which contributes towards my final grade. The work experience would also boost my confidence when applying for jobs upon graduation.

How is the course structured and assessed?

The course's format is structured similarly to some college level courses, but with a bigger focus on strengthening employability.

It is divided into three modules per semester, equating to six modules over the year. As you progress from first year to third year (fourth if you do the professional placement year) there's a real focus on developing and applying the skills learned to real-life industry scenarios, to set you up for a successful career in the sector.

Each module is also assessed through two stages. The first is a deadline assignment taking place about halfway through the module and the second is a three-hour exam.

What's your university experience been like so far?

My university experience has overall been very positive. I've enjoyed my time here at Salford because you learn a lot of theory, but are also given a chance to apply it to real-life situations. While the subject I'm studying is quite complex, I can see a clear pathway into the finance industry and the career I'm working towards.

How have you managed your finances as a student?

Initially, I had support from my family and I applied for a student loan to support myself. However, as part of my placement year, due to my achievements and the contributions I made within the organisation, I was able to secure a part-time role with the team to continue working during my final year.

Briefly tell us about your plans for after graduation.

I plan to pursue a career in auditing. While I know it can be challenging, it's also incredibly interesting and rewarding, so I'm excited to explore this path.

What tips would you give to others thinking about going to university?

  • Research is key. Take the time to explore different universities and the courses they offer to ensure you find the one that best suits your needs.
  • Grow your network. Socialising and meeting new people are such an important part of your university journey. Whether that's spending time with friends, colleagues, fellow students or speaking to tutors and the employability team, university is a great opportunity to make strong connections.
  • Attend as many employability events and public seminars as possible. They really can help with your personal growth, career development and progression, while helping to open your eyes to the types of organisations and roles out there.
