  1. Exoplanets and planetary physics

    PhD / MPhil

The Open University - Department of Physics and Astronomy

The study of extrasolar planets is a rapidly moving field at the forefront of astrophysics. The Astronomy Discipline is involved in the search for new exoplanets, in multiwavelength follow-up studies of established planets, consideration of habitability in novel contexts, and in the modelling of exoplanetary atmospheres and interiors.

  2. Cell and molecular biomedicine

    MPhil / PhD

The Open University - Faculty of Health and Social Care

Our research focuses on the molecular and cellular processes underlying diseases that have a significant impact on society, with the aim of identifying novel therapeutic agents for these conditions. Key themes of our research are: 1) cardiovascular disorders, including those affecting the cerebrovascular network such as multiple sclerosis and stroke and those affecting the heart such as cardiac arrhythmias; 2) anti-cancer therapies; 3) mechanisms underlying ageing at the organismal and cellular level; 4) nervous system tissue engineering and culture modelling; 5) appetite and reproductive physiology; and 6) interactions between immune and adipose cells.

  3. Climate change and ecosystem services

    MPhil / PhD

The Open University - Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Studies recognise the nature of Earth's climate system as being intimately associated with processes in the oceans, feedbacks with the biosphere and astronomical influences. Superimposed upon these interactions is the increasingly important role played by humans in modifying Earth's radiative balance and other components of the Earth system though, for example, nutrient enrichment and landuse change.

  4. Cosmology and extragalactic astronomy

    PhD / MPhil

The Open University - Department of Physics and Astronomy

Cosmology and extragalactic astronomy at the OU focuses on the star-forming galaxies, active galaxies and strong gravitational lensing, addressing fundamental questions about the evolution of galaxies and their dark matter haloes. We have a strong record of promoting the visibility of graduate students in major international consortia.

  5. Applied cognitive psychology

    MPhil / PhD

The Open University - Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology has a well-established reputation for its innovative approach and commitment to real world application. This area of the department's work is wide ranging and involves researchers undertaking both collaborative and individual projects.

  6. Astrochemistry

    MPhil / PhD

The Open University - Department of Physics and Astronomy

Astrochemistry is the study of molecules in space, how they form, where they form, and what role they play in shaping the formation and evolution of astrophysical systems, particularly in star and planet formation. The chemical interactions between atoms, ions, and molecules in both the gas and solid phase span from the coldest, darkest regions of space, known as the interstellar medium, right to the surface of planets, where such processes may be key in astrobiology ?

  7. Biogeochemistry and ecosystem ecology

    PhD / MPhil

The Open University - Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Research focuses on Earth's terrestrial ecosystems and biosphere atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases. Studies range from investigations of the smallest microbial unit to whole catchment ecosystems and across a wide range of latitudes, with a developing focus on tropical ecosystems.

  8. Theoretical and computational physics

    PhD / MPhil

The Open University - Department of Physics and Astronomy

We have a wide range of research in theoretical and computational physics, including condensed matter theory, modelling of electron scattering from molecules and molecular clusters, theory of cold atom quantum simulators and finally biophysics. Our team of PhD students is carrying out research at the forefront of these fields.

  9. Tectonics and mountain building

    PhD

The Open University - Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Our research into tectonics and mountain building research covers the processes and mechanisms relating to how mountains form on the surface of our planet and how the continental crust deforms from the macroscale to the microscale. In particular our research focuses on mountain belts that form during continent-continent collision, such as the modern Himalayas and Caucasus and the ancient Caledonides.

  10. The social and cultural study of music

    PhD / MPhil

The Open University - Department of Music

This broad topic encompasses work in several distinct disciplines; ethnomusicology; sociology; social history; social psychology; human geography; education; and marketing. We particularly encourage work that combines approaches and crosses the boundaries between disciplines.
