PhD: The normal minimum entrance requirement is an upper second class honours degree or master's degree, relevant to the proposed area of study, from a recognised higher education institution in the UK. You should also have experience of academic research in the previous four years, normally in the form of either a master's degree in research methods, an undergraduate degree with a research element in the final year, or work-related experience with evidence through research reports. Course description
The Department of Psychology has a well established reputation for its innovative approach and commitment to real world application. This area of the department's work is wide-ranging and involves researchers undertaking both collaborative and individual projects. As well as a commitment to addressing applied issues, interests also focus on theoretical and methodological innovation, including in relation to statistical modelling. Specific areas covered include face perception, visual attention, expertise, hypnosis and folk understandings of psychological process and these are linked to application in areas such as forensic technology, driving and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. An interdisciplinary approach is often taken which has led to strong links with researchers in other departments and faculties, producing a vibrant research culture in this area of enquiry.

Potential research projects

- Application of theoretical models of practice learning to learning and using complex systems.
- Face perception, recognition and recall and factors influencing these processes.
- Neural network simulation of cognitive processes.
- The nature of folk psychology and its applications, e.g. attribution theory research.
- Dual tasking capabilities.
